I am Famished for some Roman Flavours. Are You?

Traditional dishes of Rome that will make you drool
I am so very hungry; it would be a sin not to go through this interesting write-up, which is all about Roman cuisine.

Borrowing its flavours and ingredients from Greek and Turkish flairs, a normal dinner begins with some crispy and delicious appetizers, salads and dips, followed by mouth-watering, meat-based delights, ending with coffee or a dessert.

Well, with unlimited dishes it is rather baffling to point out the best. Rome not only invites flights to Rome for its iconic structure; but food too. In case you happen to be in Rome, here are a few top traditional foods that you can relish.

Meze

An amusing name, Meze is equivalent to the Spanish tapas. It is rather a common choice of cold and hot starters. A well-plated Meze platter comprises hummus, tahini, taramosalata (scrambled fish with potatoes and lemon), a yoghurt dip and Haloumi (grilled goat meat with cheese).

Kebabs

Assorted palatable, homemade chunks of meat are quite a relished customary fare in Rome. Meaty portions such as chicken, fish and lamb are cooked on a skewer garnished with olive oil, oregano and lemon. The texture itself is so very alluring; make sure you are famished before gobbling up a lot of them.

Kleftiko

Anything cooked or baked in clay oven will make you drool. That is what Kleftiko is - a traditional lamb dish baked in a kiln and cooked for at least 24 hours in an oven, marinated in lemon juice and cinnamon. This is often prepared during festivals and loved by locals as well as tourists.

Moussaka

Similar to lasagne, the Moussaka is called as a 'celebrity’s dish'. With layers of eggplant, lamb and topped with bechamel sauce, Moussaka is a relished Mediterranean dish served with a white sauce. Visit any beachside resort or a hotel to enjoy this lovely dish.

Koupepia

These appetizers are truly delicious. Minced meat, mixed in rice, wrapped in steamed leaves is nothing less than a heavenly dish. It does look unique and has an amazing taste. So, what do we call them, Roman Sushi?

Ekmek Kadayif

It’s time now for some dessert. Have a sweet tooth? A dessert very similar to bread pudding that will surely gratify your sweet tooth.
Prepared with cake, honey and nuts, it's a delight that stays with you forever, making you crave for more. No wonder, an evening meal with this strange and tasty dessert will make your day.

Roman Coffee

Now this is strong, due to the reason that it is prepared from finely, fresh ground Brazilian coffee beans and not served until a thick froth covers the top. This coffee is enjoyed in tiny cups with powdered sugar.

Ouzo

Ouzo is a traditional drink created with selected and distilled dry wines with anise seeds. Looks almost like an aerated drink; a favourite of many. It has a liquor-like taste, but not that hard. The Ouzo is mostly served with some appetizers such as meze, fried fish and feta cheese.

Stifado

A luscious stew, either prepared with rabbit or beef, boiled in vinegar and wine mixed with spices, onions and oregano.

November is the perfect time to bag cheap flights to Rome, explore this grand city, and get a taste of Roman food as well. Though the perfect time to visit Rome is from October to April, you can book Rome flights and save huge to enjoy other things in this phenomenal city.
